If you live in areas that experience harsh winter weather, have the entire steering system inspected before winter arrives.
- Unusual noise when turning the steering wheel
- A shimmy or shake in the steering wheel
- Heavy or unresponsive steering at low speeds or during parking lot maneuvers
- Steering wheel not returning to 'center' properly
- Service power steering system light illuminating in the driver information center
- Check your power steering fluid levels and belts and hoses.
- Wet spots/fluid stains on the ground beneath the vehicle.
- Especially have the inner and outer tie rods inspected for grease leaks and excessive lash or 'play'
Signs of wear for steering gears include but are not limited to:
- Excessive 'play' in the steering wheel
- Unusual noises from the steering gear or related components, such as the EPS rack or pinion steering gear motor
- Undue movement, or 'lash', in the outer and inner tie rods
