Before purchasing and installing a rack and pinion assembly, make sure it is the correct fit for your vehicle.
- If you live in areas that experience harsh winter weather, have the entire steering system inspected before winter arrives.
- Have the inner and outer tie rods inspected for grease leaks and excessive lash or play
- Regularly inspect rack and pinion assemblies for signs of damage or wear and replace them if signs of damage are found.
Signs of wear for rack and pinion assemblies include but are not limited to:
- Excessive play in the steering wheel
- Unusual noises from the assembly or related components
- Undue movement or lash
- Unusual noise when turning the steering wheel
- A shimmy or shake in the steering wheel
- Heavy or unresponsive steering at low speeds or during parking lot maneuvers
- Steering wheel not returning to center properly
- Service power steering system light illuminating in the driver information center
- Wet spots/fluid stains on the ground beneath the vehicle
