Good Maintenance Practices:
- Before the purchase and installation of a trailer hitch, make sure it is the correct fit and classification for your vehicle.
- Before you begin towing, consider your vehicle's maximum towing capacity. If you exceed your vehicle's maximum towing capacity you risk damage to your engine, transmission, rear axle, and brakes.
- Be sure to lubricate the hitch receiver and ball regularly. Lubricating the ball will help lower friction and allow the trailer to turn smoothly.
- Regularly inspect trailer hitches for signs of damage or wear, and replace them if signs of damage are found.
- Refer to your Vehicle Owner's manual for additional vehicle maintenance practices.
Signs of wear or damage for trailer hitches include but are not limited to:
- Pitting or scratches on the surface
- Visible rust
- Dings or dents which can potentially rust if not replaced
