Good Maintenance Practices:
- To begin, wipe off any debris around the oil filler cap to prevent debris from entering the engine upon removal.
- Remove the oil filler cap by twisting it counterclockwise and removing it from the top of the engine.
- Inspect the oil filler cap mating o-ring and/or mating surface for any cracks or splitting.
- A cracked, worn, or split oil filler cap can cause debris and/or moisture to enter the engine.
- A poor sealing cap can also cause a check engine light on OBDII vehicles (1996 and later).
Signs of wear include:
- Oil leak
- Oil vapor odors
- Uneven idle
